Mission of the Rainey-McCullers School of the Arts Social Studies Department

It is the mission of the Social Studies Department to develop capable citizens who are empowered with the knowledge, abilities, and attitudes to make informed and responsible decisions in today’s diverse world. The purpose of these classes will be to help students better understand the geography, culture, history, government, economics, and religion as it relates to our rigorous and challenging content.  Students are expected to be open to learning in a variety of ways and enjoy the culturally  diverse atmosphere in each course offered. We also focus on cross-curricular lessons and activities that integrate the arts that we offer here on our campus.

Mr. John Brock – Department Chair

Mr. John Brock has been teaching at Rainey-McCullers since the school first opened in 2017. He is a graduate of Columbus State University with a Bachelor’s in Business Administration and Master’s in the Arts of Teaching. Mr. Brock teaches all of United States History and AP United States History classes at Rainey-McCullers as well as various middle school courses. Mr. Brock is also the Student Government Association (SGA) Faculty Sponsor and 10th Grade Sponsor.

Mr. Mark Alexander

Mark Alexander was born in Columbus, Georgia and educated in the Phenix City School System. Upon graduation he accepted an academic scholarship to Alabama A&M University where he received a Bachelor’s degree in History and Political Science and was named a Harry s. Truman History Scholar nominee for his work as a contributing researcher for a published work entitled “Past Jewish Life in East Alabama and West Georgia”.  Mr. Alexander went on to further his education obtaining a Master’s and an Educational Specialist’s Degree in Education from Troy University. He completed the final course requirements for a second Master’s Degree in Adult Education –Curriculum and Instructional Development. With a passion for history and cultural preservation, he has served as lead History teacher in regional Alabama School Systems and has collaborated to develop a three-year web-based teaching curriculum tool project entitled “Plowing Freedoms Ground “: Promoting Civic Competence” in collaboration with Auburn University and Indiana University. The project has been utilized as a history and civics teaching tool nationwide within school systems. Mr. Alexander retired from the Alabama Education System and currently teaches Economics, Middle School History, World History, United States History, AP Psychology, and American Civics and Government in Muscogee County. He is a law librarian/education media resource specialist (part time) with the State of Georgia. Mr. Alexander is a member of the Columbus Museum Education Committee, the Historic Columbus Foundation, Association for Continuing Higher Education, American Association for Adult and Continuing Education, American Alliance of Museums, Professional Network for Adult Education and Lifelong Learning, the Alabama Education Association, The National Education Association, the Professional Association of Georgia Educators, and Past Chairman of Literacy for Life and More. His hobbies are jazz formula one and archaeological/anthropological research.
